Located in Iowa City, Iowa, IIEP provides intensive English
instruction and a cultural, social, and academic orientation to the
United States. Instruction emphasizes spoken and written English crucial
to college and university work in the U.S. Grammar, writing, reading,
listening, comprehension, pronunciation, and conversation skills are
taught each day at all levels. Students receive 20 hours of instruction
per week in addition to individual work in the language laboratory.
Since the classes are small (12-15 students) each student will receive
personal guidance from the teachers.

Every summer (mid-June through mid-July), free classes in English as a Second Language are offered to spouses and other adult family members of University of Iowa students. Classes concentrate on speaking and listening, though help with other aspects of English is also available. Each class period is approximately one hour, and all classes take place during the daytime. Speakers of all ability levels are welcome. No daycare is provided. Classes are taught by University of Iowa graduate students who have completed specialized training in teaching ESL, and they are usually located in the lower level of the 450 Hawkeye Drive apartments in Iowa City. For more information on these free summer classes, call the ESL Programs Office at 319.335.5630 in late May.
